Fran's world was once confined to a cramped underground lab. All he knew was that every few days he would be strapped to an operating table, and a few days later, someone would inject him with a fluorescent green liquid. Pike was the only one in the neighboring cage who ever spoke to him. Pike was small enough to go unnoticed. They had never seen each other's faces, but every night, Fran would press his ear against the vent and listen to the stories Pike made up. The stories always had two people: one to break things, and one to figure things out.
They never discussed an escape plan. They simply did what they were good at and trusted the other to fill in the gaps. One night, Pike's voice came through the vent: I know how to bypass the security system. Fran was silent for three seconds: I know how to break the door. Where to go next? That part had never been discussed.
On the day of their escape, Fran tore apart their confinement with his bare hands, while Pike used copper wire he had collected to short-circuit the lab's entire communications system. But when they reached the wall, they were spotted. Amid a hail of bullets, Pike didn't crawl through the secret passage alone. Instead, he turned back and used a homemade taser to take down the guards. Fran carried Pike over the wall as the lab erupted in flames behind them. Neither of them looked back.
Three weeks later, they were arrested for theft and assault and sent to the Isle of the Banished. There, the duo earned their reputation: Fran's fists could crush anything, guided by the calm voice of the small figure perched on his shoulder.
